Internship Opportunity!
The City of San Francisco Planning Department’s Pavement to Parks project is seeking a fall intern!
Context
The Pavement to Parks program was conceived to help San Franciscans imagine portions of the public right-of-way reconfigured as public space to be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. The Pavement to Parks program was established to explore low-cost, quick, easily implementable public space improvements with the goal of energizing the public realm.
The City’s first Parklet was installed in 2010. 30 parklets are now installed or under construction and 35 parklets are under various stages of review. This new open space typology has inspired cities across the country and around the world to develop parklet programs of their own. Currently, Oakland, Vancouver, New Orleans, Chicago, Boston, New York and others all have pilot projects under way or programs in development.
Yet developing a program from scratch is challenging. Cities have to resolve with a multitude of issues such as legislative processes, design considerations and public education and outreach, to name a few. As more cities attempt to implement their own parklet programs, the lessons learned from the San Francisco experience have become an increasingly important story to tell.
