NEW DIRECTIONS IN 21st CENTURY ANIMATION,
MEET FIVE BAY AREA ANIMATORS WHO ARE CREATING REMARKABLE ART FOR ADULTS!

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2 PM, FREE
SAN FRANCISCO STATE, FINE ARTS BUILDING, ROOM 101 (Coppola Theatre)

BAY AREA PREMIERE OF MARTHA GORZYCKI’S “VOICES FROM KAW THOO LEI”

Karen people believe no one hears their pleas for help as their country remains ravaged by war that has lasted more than six decades.  This film presents a collective witnessing of terrorism and genocide in Burma (Myanmar).  Using stop-motion techniques, more than 10,000 photos dissolve into a somber landscape over which Voices From Kaw Thoo Lei may be heard.
Her film is an emotionally moving sound experience that is augmented with animated visuals. Her skillfully edited and mixed collage of voices and carefully chosen visuals make her new film a powerful work of art.  You probably have never seen animation used like this before.  Martha is pioneering a new sophisticated form of the art.
Martha will also present Unfurling (2 min, silent). It has played in every possible exhibition venue around the world: film festivals, LED billboards, outdoor projection, gallery installation, window projection, online streaming, and iPod wearable art.

BEN RIDGWAY RETROSPECTIVE
Ben Ridgway’s Inner Space Artifact was just shown at SIGGRAPH 2015 and at… It also is a Vimeo staff pick winner and it won the ASIFA-SF Experimental Prize in June.  His visionary adventure into an unknown world is a rich aesthetic experience full of wonderful visuals.  He has used his computer files to turn several of his images into cast bronze sculptures that are being sold to fine art collectors. https://benridgway.wordpress.com/
Plus examples of Ben’s earlier work including an example of his surreal hand drawn work before he began to create his visionary work with computers.
SAN FRANCISCO PREMIERE OF DAVID CHAI’S “BOUND FOR GLORY”
Plus two more of his delightful shorts, Behind My Behind and Why Do We Put Up With Them?
David teaches at San Jose State University.  His works are both humorous and poignant.

CHARLIE CANFIELD’S “AMOUR VERT”
Amour Vert is a socially conscious message as well as an ad.  This new trend in commercials was just recognized by Adweek in their lead article “Making Ads with Social Messages.”  Plus a sneak preview of his humorous just completed footage for the documentary What I’m Hearing In My Head.

DAN McHALE’S “SPLOTCH”
Splotch is a playful meditation that begins with a cup of coffee.  Dan’s career in commercial animation has taken him to jobs in Europe, Asia and various parts of the US.  Somehow he has found time to also complete wonderful personal shorts and paintings that have been exhibited in galleries.
