Parklet Competition Winners Announced!

During Spring 2013, students of the School of Landscape Architecture’s LAN 498/695: Design/Build/Collaborate class designed competition entries for a Parklet and fence structure that is intended as the gateway, social gathering space, and bus shelter for the Academy of Art University’s 601 Brannan St. building. Students presented their design schemes to the City of San Francisco’s Planning Department on May 16th, 2013 who acted as a design review and jury panel for the competition.

With consideration to design guidelines, site specific needs, and student design concepts, the City of San Francisco’s Planning Department has selected the following three designs as possible candidates for build-out.

First Place: Sound and Beat;  Jason Jeon, MFA, Landscape Architecture

“Sound & Beat” Parklet aims to extrude the lively pulse and energy that is tangible within the 601 Brannan building to the outdoors through forms derived from digital sound waves. This Parklet pays close attention to mitigating the issue of homeless occupation through varied height seats, lighting, and aesthetically pleasing swaths of drought tolerant planting

Second Place: Synergize;  Alyssa Irawan, BFA, Interior Architecture and Design (Graduated Spring 2013)

The “Synergize” Parklet is designed as a hub for SoMA residents, AAU students, local businesses, and pedestrians to socially engage with one another by offering various programmed spaces. These spaces include: An AAU shuttle shelter, a waiting area, a larger communal sitting area, and an intimate face-to-face sitting area.

Third Place: Embrace;  Haleh Rahmani, BFA, Interior Architecture and Design

601 Brannan is home to three Schools of Landscape Architecture, Interior Architecture and Design, and Architecture. “Embrace” is designed to highlight all three disciplines in a sleek semi- covered public open space which is intended for socializing, waiting for shuttle buses, and charging phones under a glass and steel structure that deflects wind, and incorporates seats that swivel 360 degrees which add an extra element of fun.

Congratulations to the three winners!!!!!!
