Public Open Space is Worth Fighting For!
Taksim Gezi Park is an urban oasis in central Istanbul, Turkey. Historically this space was the crossroads of where the drikning water from northern Istanbul was divided and distributed to other areas of Istanbul; Hence the name “Taksim” which in Arabic literally translates into “division”.
Modern day Taksim Gezi park is a hub for transportation, shopping, tourism, leisure, festivals, parades, and many other activities, and is loved dearly by the Turkish people as well as tourists. Unfortunately, this beautiful space is in danger of being demolished and turned into a shopping mall. For the past 4 days, the people of Istanbul have been protesting the demolition of their beloved Urban open space, but have been met with excessive police force.
