Last Call!!!! Park(ing) Day Entries Due FRIDAY JULY 19 – NOON!
Interested in designing and implementing a temporary Public Open Space in San Francisco? Then mark your calendar for July 19th and September 20th, and here is why:
“PARK(ing) Day is an annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places. The project began in 2005 when Rebar, a San Francisco art and design studio, converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park in downtown San Francisco. Since 2005, PARK(ing) Day has evolved into a global movement, with organizations and individuals (operating independently of Rebar but following an established set of guidelines) creating new forms of temporary public space in urban contexts around the world.
The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat … at least until the meter runs out!” (Source: www.parkingday.org)
This year, the Academy of Art University School of Landscape Architecture will be hosting 5 to 8 Park(ing) Day spaces adjacent to AAU buildings within San Francisco. The designs of these spaces are open to all students within the University.

Design Parameters
Before starting this competition, ask yourself what the ultimate small scale public open space of your imagination looks like?
Design a 9’x20’ (approximate dimensions) public open space in association with one of the Academy of Art University’s buildings that is your artistic brain child! This space will be a ONE DAY temporary installation. Consider the following parameters in the design:
- Find a metered parking spot adjacent to one of Academy of Art University’s buildings
- Loading zones, fire hydrant zones, commuter lanes, or “no-stopping zones” are off limits and can NOT be used for Park(ing) Day installations
- Consider what pedestrian and bicycle oriented amenities are lacking in the area around your site
- Identify your target audience. i.e. young professionals, tourists, students, etc…
- Analyze the environmental conditions of the site: sun, shade, wind, traffic, pedestrian circulation, etc…
- Refrain from using live ground covers such as grass – be creative, and create a ground cover that will be visually interesting and inviting to pedestrians
- The design must have a sense of enclosure, and must be visible to on-coming traffic
- Seating is highly encouraged in order to invite pedestrians into your designed space
- No open flames
- Incorporation of a sign that indicates your specific parking spot has been transformed into a Park(ing) Day installation. The sign must include an AAU logo, the name of the installation, and/or short concept statement, and student participant names
- Installation must be removed, and the space cleaned up at the end of your metered time
- Students are responsible for feeding the meter associated with the parking spot selected
- Majority of the design must use recycled and recyclable materials
- Remember this installation is a ONE DAY ONLY temporary piece. It must be able to be assembled and removed in less than an hour time frame
- The amount of hours that your team decides to feed the meter is the amount of time that the installation will be in place. The design must consider the differences between an installation that will be in place for 3 hours vs. a design that will be in place for 6 hours
Competition Submission Requirements
- Individual or team entry permitted. Max number of members per team: 3

- Key Map -Find a metered parking spot adjacent to an AAU building
- A minimum of three perspective renderings that clearly showcase design intent
- Perspectives must have a human figure drawn in them for scale
