Thank You: Welcoming LGBTQ+ Pride Month

June 1st marks the unofficial start of summer, as well as the start of LGBTQ+ Pride Month.

In honor of the LGBTQ+ trailblazers who transformed the fields of art and design, Academy of Art University would like to thank our LGBTQ+ faculty, student body, and alumni for their contributions to our vibrant community.

June is designated as LGBTQ+ Pride Month in recognition of the Stonewall Riots, which started on June 28, 1969. While Stonewall was not the first LGBTQ+ demonstration to take place in the United States, the actions of Stonewall protesters such as Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Stormé DeLarverie, and many more sparked marches nationwide in 1970. These marches eventually led to today’s Pride parades.

Ultimately, the Academy community would not be as lively and dynamic as it is today without the vital energy and presence of our LGBTQ+ faculty, student body, and alumni. So once more, thank you for sharing with us your spirit and creativity!
