The 2017 IFLA, CSLA and AAPQ Congress of the World Design Summit will be held in Montréal, Québec, October 16-19, 2017.

IFLA Student Design Competition

The deadline for the Student Design Competition is September 12th, 2017. While the briefs are available in other languages, please note that the definitive versions are in English and French.

To participate in the Student Design Competition, consult the brief (below) and submit the entry form well before the deadline. You will be invoiced for the registration fee once you submit the entry form. To be eligible, your submission fee must be paid before the deadline.

Meet the Keynote Speakers for Landscape Architecture

Timothy Morton, Nina-Marie Lister and Dirk Sijmons will be the keynote speakers for landscape architecture at the World Design Summit in October 2017.

Timothy Morton is Rita Shea Guffey Chair in English at Rice University. He gave the Wellek Lectures in Theory in 2014 and has collaborated with Björk, Haim Steinbach and Olafur Eliasson. He is the author of Dark Ecology: For a Logic of Future Coexistence (Columbia, 2016), Nothing: Three Inquiries in Buddhism (Chicago, 2015), Hyperobjects: Philosophy and Ecology after the End of the World (Minnesota, 2013), Realist Magic: Objects, Ontology, Causality (Open Humanities, 2013), The Ecological Thought (Harvard, 2010), Ecology without Nature (Harvard, 2007), eight other books and 160 essays on philosophy, ecology, literature, music, art, architecture, design and food. Timothy Morton has developed a deep and unconventional perspective on ecology and our relationship with nature.

Nina-Marie Lister is Graduate Program Director and Associate Professor in the School of Urban + Regional Planning at Ryerson University in Toronto. A Registered Professional Planner (MCIP, RPP) trained in ecology, environmental science and landscape planning, she is the founding principal of PLANDFORM, a creative studio practice exploring the relationship between landscape, ecology, and urbanism. Prof. Lister’s research, teaching and practice focus on the confluence of landscape infrastructure and ecological processes within contemporary metropolitan regions, with a particular focus on resilience and adaptive systems design.

Dirk Sijmons (M.Sc. Engineering) (b.1949, the Netherlands), is a landscape architect and a founding partner of H+N+S Landscape Architects (since 1990). H+N+S Landscape Architects received the National Prince Bernard Culture award in 2001. In 2002 Dirk Sijmons received the Rotterdam-Maaskant award for his contribution to landscape theory and his role in the national debate. Among his many contributions, Sijmons was appointed as the first State Landscape Architect of the Netherlands for the period 2004-2008. This new appointment was meant to advise the Dutch government on landscape matters. The 2008 publication, Greetings from Europe, a book addressing the influence of tourism on landscape, is the result of a European wide initiative he took as a State advisor.
