Female Leaders in Art and Design: Julie Trachtenberg
School of Landscape Architecture instructor Julie Trachtenberg is optimistic that the industry is taking great strides towards gender equality. Hear more from this week’s featured Female Leader in Art and Design.
“I did have some rocky experiences within the field regarding gender biases, and I did speak up,” she said. “But I felt that I had to be careful as to how that was communicated as a woman, and yet I knew that I had to continue to speak up.”
This was Julie’s response when asked if she’s had any experience dealing with gender inequality in her practice as a landscape designer. Her method of dealing with it—speaking up—is one of the most basic things women can do to get the conversation started on gender equality in any industry.
Her outlook seems to be positive, though. Julie notes how women have been upgrading their skills to be able to take on more traditionally male-designated jobs, such ash construction.
“The more this happens, the more successful the projects will be.”
